It’s time for a little March Madness, NBA trade-rumor-style. And hey, why not?
A hypothetical offseason trade floated by Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report suggests the Mavericks would move Kyrie Irving to the Magic as part of a roster reshaping around rookie star Cooper Flagg.
The proposal looks like this:
Mavericks receive: Jalen Suggs, Jonathan Isaac
Magic receive: Kyrie Irving
Irving is currently recovering from the torn left ACL he suffered last season against the Kings and will not play again this year.
The thinking behind the idea is fairly straightforward. Dallas appears to be shifting toward a younger timeline built around Flagg. Orlando, meanwhile, may still be searching for a true lead guard to elevate its offense.
Adding Irving to a core that already includes Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane would give the Magic one of the more intriguing starting groups in the Eastern Conference.
Irving signed a three-year, $118 million contract with Dallas last July and is set to earn $39.5 million next season.
Granted, it’s just a hypothetical. But as the Mavericks continue to reshape their roster around Flagg, Irving’s long-term future in Dallas could become a storyline to watch.
