It appears the Cleveland Cavaliers have their man in Kenny Atkinson, their ninth head coach in 20 years (if you count Mike Brown twice). But he also comes with previous NBA experience — which could mean something.
Basically, the Cavs avoided the splashier route, a la John Beilein, and just went with a guy who’s “been there before.” Will that make Atkinson a fit, a guy who can get the team to the Eastern Conference finals — the next natural step in the process?
I discussed that, the the futures of Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, and more with Chase Smith on the latest Cavs on the Break NBA podcast. Give it a listen right here on Apple Podcasts or in either player directly below.
Oh, and guess what? The Cavs have to make a pick in the 2024 NBA Draft on Wednesday. More specifically, they have the No. 20 overall pick. The entire draft is considered a crapshoot, but that’s OK. That’s what makes you think you might be able to land a steal at No. 20.
Of course, it also features Bronny James, perhaps the name most well-known to casual fans. Could he be selected in the first round? Hey, this is the NBA and his name is marketable. So you just never know. Whoever drafts Bronny is gonna sell a lot of jerseys — at least at first.
Anyway, back to Atkinson. We have more on the hire here, as well as more on what is expected to be next for Mitchell here. Thanks for following along and checking us out.
