Hawks Discussed Trae Young Trade With Spurs Before Trade Deadline

According to Howard Beck of The Ringer, the Atlanta Hawks discussed a Trae Young trade with the San Antonio Spurs before the NBA trade deadline. Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks, San Antonio Spurs, NBA trade rumors

Many people around the NBA believe Young could be traded by the Hawks this summer instead of Dejounte Murray

“He’s available,” an Eastern Conference exec told Beck.

Young signed a five-year, $215 million extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’ll make $43 million next season and $45 million in 2025-26.

“I think they would love to trade Trae,” a Western Conference exec said of the Hawks, via Beck.

Young is averaging 27.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 10.9 assists this season while shooting 42.8% from the field, 37.3% from beyond the arc and 85.7% from the free-throw line. He has 34 double-doubles in 49 games.

Young doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. The three-time All-Star holds career averages of 25.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 9.5 assists.

Young will be linked to the Los Angeles Lakers since he has the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports) as LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports won’t rule out Young possibly getting traded to the Spurs to play with Victor Wembanyama.

“There are several front offices that listened to Atlanta’s pre-deadline chatter and came away from conversations with the Hawks of the belief Trae Young could become available for trade this summer — depending on Atlanta’s outcome for the remainder of this campaign,” Fischer wrote. “But for now, one spot other than Los Angeles that’s repeatedly been mentioned by NBA figures as a potential home for Young — if Atlanta were to ever consider parting with its franchise face and All-Star lead ball-handler — is San Antonio. The Spurs do lack a clear-cut pick-and-roll partner for rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.”

The Hawks are only 24-30 this season despite having Young and Murray, two of the top players in the NBA. Atlanta is currently the 10th seed in the East.
