Kings guard Malik Monk has been floated as a hypothetical fit for the Mavericks, and hey, why not?
Dan Favale of Bleacher Report raised the idea that Monk could make basketball sense for the Mavericks, who are 2-7 and sitting at the bottom of the NBA in points per game and offensive rating.
The premise is simple. Dallas needs more scoring around Anthony Davis (when healthy), Cooper Flagg and others. Monk is one of the league’s better instant-offense guards.
Favale wrote that Monk’s downhill juice creates havoc and that he’s comfortable working out of tight spacing during his time in Sacramento.
He also pointed to Monk’s success passing out of drives before this season.
“Monk is both a ball-handling alternative, and an outlet for the rookie’s own paint touches,” Favale wrote.
He suggested Monk could start now — and then potentially transition into a bench role once Kyrie Irving returns.
“Or not,” Favale wrote, noting Monk has been over 55 percent on catch-and-shoot threes and has thrived in triple-guard lineups.
Again, this is purely conceptual. It’s an idea. Not sourced reporting.
As for mechanics, Favale believes that Sacramento needs more combo forwards and a backup big and floated the idea that Dallas could get Monk for Daniel Gafford or Naji Marshall plus filler.
Monk is averaging 16.5 points, shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three.
He’s making $18.8 million this season. He’s 27. And he remains one of the league’s most reliable bench scorers.
