Report: Nets, Grizzlies Actively Discussing Dorian Finney-Smith Deal

The Memphis Grizzlies are currently in active trade discussions with the Brooklyn Nets, with Dorian Finney-Smith potentially heading to Memphis, sources tell NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line.NBA, Nets, Kings, Dorian Finney-Smith, Kevin Huerter

According to Stein, the proposed deal involves the Grizzlies sending John Konchar and Luke Kennard to Brooklyn in exchange for the veteran wing.

This trade structure was originally outlined by Stein in his recent column, with the salaries of Konchar ($6.165MM) and Kennard ($9.25MM) aligning well with Finney-Smith’s $14.9MM salary for this season. Finney-Smith also has a $15.4MM player option for 2025/26, which adds complexity to the potential deal.

But one complication in the trade revolves around Kennard’s Bird Rights. If he agrees to the deal, he would lose his Bird Rights, which could impact his NBA free agency earnings this summer. This situation may create hesitation, as Kennard would have no say in his next destination unless he consents to the trade.

Furthermore, Brooklyn is reportedly asking Memphis to include a first-round pick in the deal, while the Grizzlies are pushing for a second-round selection in return, per Stein.

NetsDaily has further clarified that the first-round pick could be in 2026, with some concern about protections tied to the pick. Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype suggests that Memphis’ 2026 pick could be particularly valuable, as it might include swap rights if the Suns have a down season.

This makes the selection highly significant for Brooklyn, especially given the few years when the Nets do not already have an extra first-round pick.

Finney-Smith, who has been a reliable three-and-D player for Brooklyn, could provide Memphis with the veteran presence they need on the wing as they continue their strong push toward the playoffs. The 31-year-old is averaging 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds in 20 games this season while shooting 45.9% from the floor and 43.5% from beyond the arc.

The Grizzlies, currently second in the Western Conference at 22-10, could use his defensive prowess and perimeter shooting to bolster their roster for a potential deep playoff run.
