The Cavaliers are promoting assistant general manager Mike Gansey to GM, and senior director of basketball operations Brandon Weems to assistant GM.
Both men will continue to serve under president of basketball operations Koby Altman, who will still have final say on all basketball-related decisions.
Gansey, of course, played high school basketball at Olmstead Falls before playing at St. Bonaventure and West Virginia. He was a key member of a WVU team, coached by former Cavs coach John Beilein, that advanced to the Elite Eight, beating Chris Paul and Wake Forest along the way.
Gansey began as an intern on the Cavs’ basketball operations side in 2011.
“Mike has been an incredible resource to me and this organization and his work behind the scenes gives me great confidence that he is ready to take on more of a leadership role,” Altman said in a team statement. “His community roots provides a unique perspective when evaluating players and the type of commitment needed to make a positive impact in Cleveland. I could not think of a better person to work alongside as we continue building this team toward sustainable success.”
Generally, promotions such as these act as little more than a new title and a pay raise.
Along with Gansey and Weems, a product of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, the Cavs announced Jason Hillman has been promoted to vice president of basketball operations from his previous title as basketball chief of staff/team counsel; and Jon Nichols to vice president of basketball strategy and personnel from from sr. director of strategy and research.
