Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons will miss the remainder of the season as he again explores treatment options for a nerve impingement in his lower back, the team announced.
Some around the NBA are wondering if this is the end of the line for Simmons, whose back issues have cost him two consecutive seasons. He has barely played in the past three years — appearing in just 47 games in that span.
This year, Simmons has appeared in just 15 for career-lows of 6.1 points and 5.7 assists.
”I feel bad for the Nets,” one opposing scout told Hoops Wire. “They took a gamble on him and it’s gone nowhere.”
Simmons, 27, was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. After a few promising seasons, particularly on defense, his lack of perimeter shooting and free-throw shooting became glaring issues.
The Nets acquired Simmons in a four-player deal involving James Harden in a February 2022 trade. Simmons is the only player in that trade who is still with the same team.
But from the sounds of things, even that could be coming to an end soon.
