Nets forward Cam Johnson is like the rest of us. He hears the name of Cam Johnson mentioned in NBA trade rumors.
But this is the world in which we live — if you’re a good player on a team that isn’t expected to go places, you’re wanted. That is where Johnson is today. He’s ready to start the season and whatever happens, happens.
“I’ve been able to feel comfortable in what’s going on,” he said, via Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “And even with the uncertainty, it’s not like an uncertainty where I don’t think that our staff here, our front office here, has a lack of trust in me.”
“So I feel confident in this group. I feel confident going forward. And I’m going to compete for this team. And it’s not even on my mind, really. I mean, there’s tons and tons and tons of basketball to be played here.”
Johnson has become the face of the team, along with point guard Dennis Schroder, following the offseason trade of Mikal Bridges to the Knicks.
Brooklyn also has a first-time NBA head coach in Jordi Fernandez. It’s very easy to view this as a rebuilding situation, which means Johnson may or may not be a fit for the long term. Everyone knows this.
As for this season, though, Johnson is ready to go.
“I kind of came into last season a couple of workouts back before that Cleveland opener, and then you’re fighting an uphill battle,” he said. “So to get out there and get through this preseason, obviously a couple of high-minute games, and to kind of build that momentum is really important, especially shooting the ball.”
