The certainty around Michael Porter Jr.’s future in Brooklyn depends on who you ask. And that alone should tell you plenty.
John Hollinger of The Athletic reported over the weekend that Porter is a “lock” to be traded by the Nets ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, citing a trusted league source.
That is strong language. Other insiders have been far less convinced.
In his latest Substack, Marc Stein acknowledged that some around the league believe the Nets could look to sell high on Porter’s breakout season. But Stein also noted continued pushback regarding Brooklyn’s appetite for an in-season deal, leaving the final decision very much unsettled.
That skepticism was echoed by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto during an appearance on YES Network. Scotto said contending teams have called to gauge Porter’s availability but stressed that the Nets are focused on taking a step forward next season and see Porter as a potential part of that plan.
In other words, interest does not equal intent.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Warriors and Bucks have both inquired about Porter since early January.
Still, Brooklyn has not signaled a desire to move him. Siegel adds the Nets’ starting point in any discussion would be a valuable first-round pick, and even that may not be enough to force a deal.
Scotto also touched on Nic Claxton, whose contract has drawn interest from teams such as the Pacers and Warriors. The Nets, however, continue to view the 26-year-old as part of their future, a stance Siegel has also heard echoed around the league.
The common thread is hesitation. Calls are being made. Prices are being set. But nothing suggests Brooklyn is eager to pull the trigger.
