The Brooklyn Nets are signaling a shift in direction, with the impending trade of Dennis Schroder to the Golden State Warriors potentially marking the start of a full-scale roster overhaul.
As Brian Lewis of The New York Post points out, this move could signal that Brooklyn is prioritizing future assets over the current season, possibly turning their attention to next year’s draft instead of a playoff push.
This shift in strategy isn’t all that surprising, given the Nets’ decision to reclaim their 2025 and 2026 first-round picks in an offseason trade with Houston.
Despite a surprising 10-15 record and a spot in the East playoff race, the Schroder trade seems poised to push the Nets further down the standings. Schroder had been a key contributor for Brooklyn, averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists per game in the first 23 games.
His solid performance and reasonable $13 million contract made him a logical trade candidate, and now, it seems his days in Brooklyn are numbered.
With Schroder gone, the Nets find themselves with an even thinner point guard rotation. Ben Simmons, often injured and inconsistent, is now the only experienced option at the position.
Meanwhile, De’Anthony Melton, who was part of the return from Golden State, is sidelined for the season with a torn ACL. The team’s remaining point guard options? Shooting guard Keon Johnson and Shake Milton.
Before the trade was finalized, Schroder opened up to Lewis about the constant trade rumors that have followed him throughout his 12-year career.
“I’ve been in the league 12 years and people have talked about my name in trade talks for 12 years,” Schröder said. “I’ve been traded only twice, so it’s just part of the game. They use it as an event to promote who’s on the block.
“I don’t really care. I’ve bought into this system right now because they pay my checks. I’m doing my job every day and staying professional. Whatever happens, happens. I understand it’s a business.”
As the Nets look to the future, this move appears to be just the beginning of a roster shakeup aimed at long-term success. The focus will likely be on developing young talent and accumulating draft picks, leaving any hopes of a playoff run behind for now.
