The Brooklyn Nets have been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2024-25 season, sitting at 9-10 and holding the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. While that’s a far cry from their struggles last year, when they finished 32-50 and out of the playoff picture, the early success may not be sustainable.
As the season wears on, Brooklyn could find itself at a crossroads, potentially becoming a major player ahead of the February trade deadline.
One name that continues to surface in trade rumors is Dorian Finney-Smith. The veteran forward, known for his 3-and-D skill set, was the subject of significant interest last season, with reports of offers including multiple first-round picks.
At the time, Nets GM Sean Marks stood firm, holding Finney-Smith as a key piece. But as Forbes’ Evan Sidery reported, the asking price has now dropped to a single first-round pick in early trade discussions. That shift could ignite significant interest from contending teams.
Finney-Smith is having a strong season, averaging 10.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.9 steals while shooting a career-high 42.2% from three-point range. He’s also knocking down 2.3 triples per game, further cementing his value as a versatile role player. For title-contending teams looking for an experienced wing, Finney-Smith checks all the boxes.
It’s not just his regular-season performance that makes him appealing. Finney-Smith has shown he can deliver in the playoffs, averaging 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds over 35 career postseason games.
Combine that with a reasonable $14.9 million salary cap hit this season and a $15.3 million player option for 2025-26, and he’s far more than just a rental.
Several teams have been keeping tabs on Finney-Smith, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Milwaukee Bucks.
The Nets have until Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. ET to decide how to proceed, but with Finney-Smith’s value rising and Brooklyn’s long-term outlook still in flux, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Marks pulls the trigger on a deal. For now, the Nets remain a team to watch as the trade market begins to take shape.
