The Nets are among the teams with trade interest in Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
Obviously, the Nets have some trade pieces — given that a trade is precisely what Kevin Durant has requested. But there is no sense the Nets would offer Durant (or Kyrie Irving) in a Mitchell trade.
Then again, the Jazz don’t really seem to want to trade Mitchell. It reportedly would take a significant offer for them to move him. Well, Durant or Irving would probably be considered “significant.”
“Also on the Mitchell front, teams monitoring the situation believe the Jazz currently are prioritizing draft picks in a return for Mitchell,” Begley wrote.
Begley also noted that for the Nets to acquire Mitchell, they would have to trade Ben Simmons, since teams are not allowed to “trade for two players who have signed max rookie extensions.”
As we relayed, both the Heat and Knicks have been linked to Mitchell, and Begley followed up on that as well.
“New York can trade up to eight of its future first-round picks in a Mitchell trade,” he wrote. “That gives New York an edge over other Mitchell suitors – like the Miami Heat – if Utah continues to prioritize draft picks.”
Mitchell, 25, is 6-foot-1 and has spent his entire career with the Jazz. He averaged 25.9 points, 5.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 67 games last season. Without question, the Jazz are sure to take plenty of calls and have lots of conversations during the NBA summer league in Las Vegas this week.
“Change is inevitable in the NBA,” Jazz GM Justin Zanuck said at a press conference over the weekend. “I’m not trying to be cryptic or anything else, but Donovan is on our roster and he’s a very, very important part of what we’re trying to do.
“Things evolve in the NBA, so I couldn’t sit here and say anybody is [untouchable]. We’re trying to build a championship team, but there’s no intent [to trade Mitchell], at all.”
