The Nets intend to sign power forward Wenyen Gabriel to a 10-day contract, via the hardship exception, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Gabriel, 24, is 6-foot-9 and has been playing for the Wisconsin Herd of the G League. He went undrafted out of Kentucky in 2018, but has spent time in the NBA, most recently with the Pelicans — averaging 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 21 appearances last season.
He has also played for the Trail Blazers and Kings.
The Nets have nine players in health and safety protocols, including Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving, who just returned to the team on a part-time basis and is unable to play.
The NBA reportedly has a vaccination rate of 97 percent, but like the NFL and NHL, is experiencing a major outbreak of positive tests and players entering protocol. The Associated Press reported Thursday evening that about 8 percent of NBA players were in protocol.
