Report: Knicks Open To Trading Mitchell Robinson

According to NBA insider James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the New York Knicks are open to trading Mitchell Robinson.

Robinson hasn’t played this season due to an ankle injury.

“League sources told The Athletic that they are under the impression that the Knicks are open to moving the oft-injured Robinson, who will make $14.3 million this season and $12.9 million next season,” Edwards III wrote. “The big man, who has been a defensive anchor for New York for several seasons, underwent foot surgery in May and has yet to play in a game this season. Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said this week that Robinson is not practicing with the team and just began running and jumping.”

The Knicks are 32-16 on the season. They are in third place in the Eastern Conference standings.

New York has been busy in the trade market. The team acquired OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors last season, Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets in July and Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves in October.

“New York doesn’t have to do anything between now and the trade deadline to reach its goals,” Edwards III wrote. “The Knicks have been fine with the roster as is. With that said, the sense around the league is that the Knicks will do something minor in order to bolster their bench, whether sooner by getting a player back in a trade or later in the buyout market.”

The Knicks drafted Robinson with the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Western Kentucky. The 26-year-old has career averages of 8.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks in 320 games.

“The fact that Leon Rose and the rest of New York’s front office haven’t done anything yet suggests they are weighing their minimal options, holding out hope that someone takes Robinson or are content with the roster as is for this season,” Edwards III wrote.
