Nothing New On Collin Sexton Front With Cavs

With the start of training camp about four weeks away, Collin Sexton and the Cavaliers have yet to come to terms on a contract.Collin Sexton

But there’s been no movement lately, and there may not be for a little while still. So basically, it’s been more of the same, and it appears no one is yet in any sort of rush.

Sexton, of course, is a restricted free agent and has not yet received an offer from another team. At least, not one that anybody knows about.

Per reports, the Cavs have offered a deal of about $40 million over three years, while Sexton and agent Rich Paul are reportedly seeking somewhere closer to $20 million annually. None of this has been confirmed, but it is what’s been reported.

Sexton could also just exercise a qualifying offer of around $8 million, then be eligible to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. That seems to be the direction in which both sides are headed — but again, there’s still time to negotiate. And both sides will use that time.

Sexton led the Cavs in scoring at 16.0 points before being lost for the season to a torn MCL, appearing in just 11 games. The Cavs went on to finish with the eighth-best record in the Eastern Conference without him, and Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen went on to become All-Stars. Garland, for what it’s worth, is also a Paul client.

It should be noted that Sexton averaged 24.3 points in 2021-22, but willingly took a step back for the good of the team before his injury. He did so without a hint of complaint and the Cavs appreciated him even more for it.

Recently, the Cavs took part in trade talks centered on Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell, but have since removed themselves from consideration, as we relayed. It is not known if Sexton was part of those talks, though we can safely assume he was.

The Jazz, it’s been said, have him on their radar, reportedly talking sign-and-trade with the Cavs earlier in the summer.

As for the here and now, well, it appears that not a whole lot has changed. Sexton is still unsigned, Paul and Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman are still being patient, and we could still have a ways to go before anything is finalized.

  1. He can and should leave this organization next summer after they handed the keys to a player besides him that isn’t even their highest star power player. Mobley is the one not DG not Sexton not anyone else. Giving Garland the pay they promised him at roughly 50 more million than another team could offer in RFA next summer even having little to do with Sexton negotiations absolutely destroyed my trust in this front office managing the cap well long term.
I give them a very small window to win much of anything with DG Mobley and Allen as the core in fact I bet if they do not win it all this season with Sexton on the QO Love healthy Rubio healthy after the break and maybe a sensational Ochai rookie season they will never reach the same levels they could have as is. SHould have done more to keep Sexton and they failed
