The Denver Nuggets announced the parting of ways with coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth earlier this week, a surprising move that sent ripples through the organization. The team informed three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, who had played his entire career under Malone, of the decision before the public announcement.
Jokic, speaking to reporters, said he was notified shortly before the news broke.
“They made a decision,” Jokic said. “It was not a discussion. They explained why, and I listened and accepted it.”
The Nuggets secured a victory against the Sacramento Kings in their first game following the shakeup, led by interim coach David Adelman. Players were encouraged to take a more active role in communication, with Jokic seen diagramming plays during a team huddle, according to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post.
“People say we’re vulnerable, but sometimes that’s when you’re most dangerous,” Jokic said, suggesting the front office’s decision may have sparked renewed focus. “Maybe they woke something up. In my country, when someone gets fired, you know you might be next. It changed something, and I think they got the reaction they wanted.”
With the playoffs approaching, Jokic stressed the need to move forward quickly. He acknowledged the emotional weight of Malone’s exit, noting their decade-long partnership.
“It was a heavy day for everybody,” Jokic said. “Especially for him and his family.”
The Nuggets have not announced a timeline for naming a permanent head coach or general manager.
