Veteran free agent Paul Millsap is drawing interest from a number of teams, but may not be in any hurry to sign, as relayed by Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Millsap, 36, is a 6-foot-7 power forward who played a vital role for the Nuggets over the past four seasons, including a run to the Western Conference finals in 2020. He is now an unrestricted free agent.
He averaged just 9.0 points and a career-low 4.7 rebounds last season, and is probably at the stage of his career where he is best suited to come off the bench.
Per Fischer, the Warriors, Hawks, Nets, Pelicans, 76ers and Timberwolves are all interested in Millsap, but he hasn’t been close to signing. And that may remain the case until well after the season begins.
“I think (Millsap is) gonna be a minimum or a midseason guy,” one source told Fischer. “What’s the rush? The money wouldn’t get much better, and he can just pick his team. What if New Orleans is really good come January? What happens when some guy gets hurt, and that team starts scrambling for a replacement? He can pick his spot.”
Fischer’s source makes a valid point. Millsap is most likely to want to join a contender and help a team make a run at a championship, probably as a reserve.
If that’s the thinking, he can undoubtedly afford to wait.
