Zion Williamson returned to action Sunday in an unfamiliar role, coming off the bench for the first time in his NBA career as the Pelicans managed his minutes following a right hip adductor strain.

Williamson had missed the previous five games and was on a restriction, prompting interim coach James Borrego to hold him out of the starting lineup so he would be available late, according to Matt Carlson of the Associated Press.

The plan worked, as Williamson was able to close the game and help New Orleans secure the win.

“It was a game plan that allowed me to close the game,” Williamson said. “The rhythm did feel pretty good, but most of all I’m glad we got the win.”

Injuries have again been a theme for Williamson this season. He has already missed 16 games due to four separate issues, continuing a trend that has defined much of his career. When available, however, he remains impactful, averaging 21.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.

New Orleans (5-22) will need Williamson on the floor as much as possible if it hopes to stabilize its season.

“Injuries suck,” Williamson said. “But the work I put in over the summer allows me to rehab faster and more efficiently.”
