Pelicans power forward Zion Williamson had an injection in his injured right foot and is expected to miss another four-to-six weeks, the team said in a statement.
Williamson went to Los Angeles last week to receive the injection, per Andrew Lopez of ESPN.
The former No. 1 overall pick has yet to this season after undergoing offseason foot surgery. He started to ramp it up, but the Pelicans shut him down from all basketball activities Dec. 11, indicating Williamson had suffered a setback in workouts.
“After experiencing persistent soreness in his right foot, Zion Williamson underwent medical imaging which showed a regression in the bone healing of his fifth metatarsal,” a Pelicans statement read at the time, via Hoops Wire’s Alejandro Avila. “As a result, the volume and intensity of his training will be reduced for an extended period to help allow for further bone healing. Additional updates will be provided as warranted.”
Williamson, 21, is 6-foot-7 and averaged 27.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 61 games last season. He suffered the injury during the offseason and has been recovering from the ensuing surgery since.
This marks the second time in three seasons he has missed a large chunk of time with an injury, and that alone is truly a bit concerning. As we relayed last month, the team has even changed its culinary practices to help Williamson get to an ideal playing weight.
The Pelicans are hoping the latest treatment/injection will do the trick and “help with the bone healing in the foot,” Lopez wrote.
They have been the subject of trade rumors in recent days, most recently around backup center Jaxson Hayes, as we relayed earlier.
