Despite growing speculation surrounding Zion Williamson’s future with the New Orleans Pelicans, the star forward’s agent, Bill Duffy, has no plans to push for a trade ahead of the February 6th deadline, sources tell NBA insiders Bobby Marks and Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
Williamson, who has been sidelined for much of the season due to injuries, has only played six games, averaging 22.7 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 31.1 minutes per game.
Currently dealing with a hamstring injury, Williamson remains week-to-week as both he and the Pelicans focus on getting him back on the floor without further complications.
A source close to the situation told ESPN, “Let’s ramp him up and create value for him, whether that’s with the Pelicans or another team.”
The sentiment suggests that both Williamson and New Orleans are committed to making sure he gets back to full health before considering any drastic steps.
Williamson’s current five-year, $197 million contract includes several clauses that could make it non-guaranteed if his injuries continue. Having already missed 26 games this season, Williamson’s deal could be terminated before July 15th, when his $38.9 million salary becomes fully guaranteed.
However, ESPN sources indicate that the Pelicans have no intention of taking that route, though acquiring teams could explore such an option if they are operating as a second apron team looking for salary cap relief.
While the Pelicans aren’t actively looking to move Williamson, rival executives have suggested that teams like the Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls could have interest.
As one executive told ESPN, “Take a swing and work on his body. It would be complicated with his salary, but I think it would be doable.”
At this juncture, though, Williamson’s trade value could be as low as a late first-round pick and salary filler.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his health and trade value, Williamson’s agent has made it clear that a trade isn’t being actively pursued — at least not yet. For now, the focus remains on his rehabilitation and eventual return to the court.
