Raptors shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. intends to pick up the $18.6 million player option on his contract, agents Rich Paul and Lucas Newton told Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report/TNT.
Trent would like to remain with the Raptors long term, Haynes added. By picking up the option, he will be eligible to be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Interestingly, Trent was widely expected to opt out of his current deal and test the market, as one of the best 3-and-D guys available. But he instead seemingly likes the direction the Raptors are headed and is perhaps setting himself up for an even larger payday in 2024. He will become eligible for an extension next month.
Trent, 24, averaged 17.4 points on 43 percent shooting, including 37 percent on 3-pointers, in 66 games this past season, his first full year in Toronto.
