The Raptors have at least kicked the tires on Anthony Davis.
More specifically, Josh Lewenberg of TSN.ca confirmed that Toronto has conveyed “exploratory interest” in Davis, but he remains skeptical that a deal with the Mavericks ultimately comes together.
In a two-team framework, Lewenberg said Toronto’s outgoing salary would likely be built around RJ Barrett and Jakob Poeltl, with Dallas almost certainly pushing for multiple first-round picks on top of that.
The Raptors have shown a willingness in the past to take buy-low swings on stars with injury histories, Lewenberg noted, but surrendering two or three first-rounders for Davis wouldn’t qualify as buying low.
For now, Toronto’s more immediate focus appears financial. Getting below the luxury tax line remains a priority, and Lewenberg continues to hear Ochai Agbaji as a possible salary-dump candidate, though any such move would likely require attaching an incentive.
Lewenberg also mentioned Daniel Gafford and Goga Bitadze as centers to monitor, while adding the Raptors are encouraged by the development of rookie forward Collin Murray-Boyles and don’t want to slow his progress.
Overall, Lewenberg believes a significant Raptors move is more likely in the offseason than before the February 5 deadline.
