It appears as Raptors president Masai Ujiri has a small decision to make. OK, maybe it’s sort of big.
Namely, Ujiri has to determine what to do about the majority of the roster. Per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, those decisions are still being weighed.
“I think you have a fascinating situation happening in Toronto right now,” Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective podcast, via RealGM. “And the reason it is fascinating is in talking to folks that have been in touch with the Raptors recently, the Raptors don’t seem to know which direction they’re going to take.
“Whether or not they are going to focus on re-signing Fred VanVleet, extending Pascal Siakam, potentially making other roster upgrades. Or whether or not they’re going to send Fred VanVleet in a sign-and-trade, maybe investigate moving other players be it OG Anunoby or Pascal Siakam.”
Anunoby has already been to the likes of the Rockets and Trail Blazers. Same goes for VanVleet with the Lakers and Suns.
Of course, the Raptors are still looking to hire a coach after parting ways with Nick Nurse for after the season. But whoever takes the job will want to know what type of hand they’re being dealt.
And by most accounts, the Raptors are still deciding.
“They’ve been in this holding pattern for a while, basically,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said. “They’ve interviewed a bunch of different coaches and it’s not clear which way they’re going to go. They probably have to make a decision about whether or not they’re going to keep these guys together and that is going to influence the kind of coach you hire.”
