Raptors Waiving PJ Tucker Before March 1 Playoff Deadline

The Raptors intend to waive veteran forward P.J. Tucker, perhaps bringing an end to his lengthy career. The news was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.PJ Tucker, Clippers, NBA

Tucker, 39, has not played this season but was traded twice before the NBA trade deadline. The Clippers sent him to the Jazz on February 1, and Utah then traded him to Toronto five days later as part of a complex five-team deal involving Jimmy Butler.

Although Tucker had been mentioned as a buyout candidate, there has been no indication that he agreed to forgo any portion of his $11.54 million salary to facilitate his release.

By being waived before the March 1 deadline, Tucker will remain eligible to join a playoff team.

Tucker’s salary is below the $12.8 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception, meaning he will be free to sign with any team once he clears waivers, with the exception of Utah. He is not allowed to return to the Jazz for at least one year due to league rules.

While Tucker has seen limited playing time in recent years, he has been a key contributor as a three-and-D player for several playoff teams over his career. His experience in the postseason and strong defensive abilities could make him an appealing addition to contenders seeking depth.

Tucker was in the final season of a three-year, $33 million contract signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022. He was traded to the Clippers as part of the James Harden deal in 2023 but struggled to find a consistent role, appearing in only 28 games with Los Angeles.
