Ja Morant is open to a possible trade out of Memphis, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, with sources describing the situation as a mutually agreed-upon exploration between the player and the Grizzlies.
Fischer reports that, much like Trae Young’s exit from Atlanta, Morant has grown receptive to a change of scenery after years as the face of the franchise.
“Similar to Young, I’ve been told that Morant is as quietly open to a change of scenery away from Memphis as his counterpart was to leaving Atlanta,” Fischer wrote, adding that the Grizzlies’ decision to canvas the market is believed to be collaborative rather than confrontational.
Reports suggest that Morant has been unhappy with head coach Tuomas Iisalo’s rotation patterns, particularly the frequent short shifts and mass substitutions, which Morant believes have made it difficult to establish rhythm on the floor.
Memphis has not committed to moving Morant and remains open to keeping him alongside Jaren Jackson Jr., but the team is listening to offers. If a deal materializes, league executives expect the Grizzlies to prioritize draft capital and young players.
Morant, 26, has appeared in 18 games this season, averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 assists while shooting 40.1 percent from the field. A two-time All-Star and the 2020 Rookie of the Year, he is earning $39.4 million this season and is under contract through 2027-28.
Fischer also notes that members of the Heat have internally discussed whether their structure and accountability could help Morant rediscover his All-Star form, should Memphis ultimately decide to move on.
