CLEVELAND — Point guard Ricky Rubio remains away from the Cavaliers and it’s still too soon to know when he might return.
The team offered an update Monday on Media Day, with training camp set to tip off the following day.
Per the release, Rubio “publicly stated in August that he was stepping away from basketball to focus on his mental health. We remain fully supportive of Ricky and his efforts which for now are best continued away from the team and have excused his absence from camp.
“We remain in regular communication and consultation with Ricky and will continue to assist him in any way possible. Out of respect for his privacy we will not have any further comment or be able to answer any questions. The Cavaliers organization wishes Ricky and his family well.”
Rubio did indeed release his own statement on the matter over the summer.
“I have decided to stop my professional activity to take care of my mental health,” he said. “I want to thank all the support I have received from the (Spanish basketball federation) to understand my decision.”
Rubio, 32, appeared in 33 games last season, his first after suffering an ACL injury, averaging 5.2 points and 3.5 assists.
