The Rockets are expected to explore a potential trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason, according to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
Speaking on the Open Floor podcast, Mannix said he anticipates Houston making a push for the Bucks star.
“The Giannis thing that’s out there, I believe that they’re gonna try to make a run at him in the offseason,” Mannix said, via Ashish Mathur of Dallas Hoops Journal.
Houston has shown a willingness to pursue major moves, having acquired Kevin Durant from the Suns last offseason. The Rockets also control multiple future draft picks, giving them the flexibility to construct a competitive offer if Antetokounmpo becomes available.
Antetokounmpo does not have a no-trade clause and holds a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. He is eligible to sign a four-year extension with Milwaukee beginning October one.
Bucks co-owner Wes Edens recently indicated the franchise will not allow the situation to linger unresolved.
“Giannis is going into the last year [of his contract],” Edens told Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. “So one of two things will happen: Either he will be extended or he’ll be traded. The likelihood you’ll let him just kind of play out the last year, we can’t afford that.”
Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and 2021 Finals MVP, has spent his entire career in Milwaukee. However, with the Bucks having won just one playoff series since their 2021 title, league-wide speculation about his future continues to grow.
