Rockets rookie power forward Usman Garuba will undergo right wrist surgery and is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Garuba, 19, is 6-foot-8 and was selected with the No. 23 overall draft pick out of Spain. He has made minimal contributions to the rebuilding Rockets, appearing in just 15 games and averaging 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds.
He had been on assignment with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G League when he suffered the injury over the weekend.
“He fell,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said told reporters. “I was talking to him about it. He was like, ‘Yeah, I fell, and I didn’t think it was that bad.’ But it turns out it’s pretty bad. He’s going to be out for a while.”
The Rockets (14-34) sat in last place in the Western Conference entering Wednesday night.
