Russell Westbrook’s deal with the Kings is for one year and $3.6 million, per NBA insider Chris Haynes. He’s expected to sign Thursday and join the team Friday, Haynes added.
The nine-time All-Star and 2017 MVP has been linked to Sacramento all summer, staying in touch as the Kings searched for point guard depth. His agent Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management confirmed the agreement to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Westbrook, 36, reunites with familiar faces — Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine — and already has long-standing ties with GM Scott Perry, assistant GM B.J. Armstrong, and coach Doug Christie.
It’s a comfortable landing spot and a smart one for a Kings team that needed veteran leadership behind Dennis Schroder.
The former MVP averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 75 games with Denver last season, bringing energy and tempo even in limited minutes.
Since 2019, Westbrook has worn more jerseys than most players see in a lifetime — Rockets, Wizards, Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets, and has been traded to and waived by the Jazz on two occasions. Sacramento becomes his latest chapter.
If nothing else, expect the Kings to play faster and louder the moment he checks in.
