76ers’ Paul George Undergoes Knee Surgery

The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Monday that NBA veteran Paul George underwent left knee surgery.

George injured his left knee during a recent workout.

George struggled in his first season with the Sixers after signing a lucrative four-year, $211 million contract with the franchise last summer. The small forward averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists last season in 41 games while shooting 43.0% from the field, 35.8% from beyond the arc and 81.4% from the free-throw line.

George’s best basketball is behind him. He is 35 years old and has a history of lower-body injuries.

A nine-time NBA All-Star, George has played for the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers and Sixers. He has career averages of 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

A California native, George will make $51.7 million next season and $54.1 million in 2026-27. He has a player option worth $56.6 million for the 2027-28 season.

The Sixers missed the playoffs last season despite having George, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. The three All-Stars only played in 15 games together.

Philadelphia drafted VJ Edgecombe with the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, signed Trendon Watford and re-signed Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon

The Sixers haven’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs in the Embiid era. Embiid underwent arthroscopic left knee surgery in April. The 2023 MVP hasn’t returned to full on-court basketball activities.

Philadelphia signed Embiid to a three-year, $192 million extension in September 2024. Embiid is owed $248.1 million over the next four seasons.
