The 76ers just haven’t been able to get out of the Eastern Conference despite the presence of Joel Embiid, and this season, James Harden.
So why not try to land another star?
That seems to be the theory of head of basketball operations Daryl Morey, as explained by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on Mike Greenburg’s radio show.
“I promise you that Daryl Morey has big, giant plans to acquire another star,” Windhorst said. “Whether he’s going to execute it, I don’t know.”
Windhorst didn’t get into specifics, but this is the NBA. Stars (or close to star-level players) become available all the time. Especially in the offseason.
“You would need a player, potentially near the end of his contract, to come and say, ‘I would like to go play in Philadelphia,'” Windhorst said. “Is that something that could happen? Maybe, we’ll see. I know that Philly, and Daryl, are going to try to make it happen.”
Of course, this will lead to a lot of eyerolls and plenty of speculation. But no one thought Morey would be able to move Ben Simmons at the trade deadline, and Morey indeed worked that magic.
Who’s to say he couldn’t do it again?
