The Philadelphia 76ers will be without Tyrese Maxey for at least a couple of games.
Maxey has been diagnosed with a sprain of the fifth finger on his right hand and will miss at least Philadelphia’s next two contests, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.
He will be reevaluated after the Sixers visit the Cavaliers on Monday and host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.
The injury occurred during Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks when Maxey collided with teammate Adem Bona. Early fears suggested the damage could be more severe, so the diagnosis is considered relatively positive news.
Still, Maxey’s absence comes at a critical time.
Philadelphia remains locked in a tight race for the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference, the final automatic playoff spot that avoids the play-in tournament.
Maxey, a two-time All-Star, is enjoying the best season of his career. The dynamic guard is averaging 28.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists while shooting 46 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three-point range.
He also leads the NBA in minutes at 38.3 per game and has served as one of the Sixers’ most consistent performers during an injury-plagued season.
