The Los Angeles Lakers are adding some help via the buyout market.
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie intends to sign in LA after being waived by the Toronto Raptors. Dinwiddie was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to Toronto in a deal involving guard Dennis Schroder.
Dinwiddie still has to clear waivers, considered a formality, before joining LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the rest.
He was also said to be considering the Dallas Mavericks, a team that appears in better position to go places with the likes of Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and newcomers P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford. But Dinwiddie visited the Lakers on Friday and hung out in the locker room, then decided to sign on.
In LA, Dinwiddie will add depth to a backcourt that already includes D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, among others.
He is averaging 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists, shooing 39 percent from the field and 32 percent on 3-pointers. He carries NBA career averages of 13.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
He played for the Mavs before and has also spent time with the Nets, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.
The Lakers (28-26) currently sit in ninth place in the Western Conference.
