The San Antonio Spurs are promoting Scott King from his role as head coach of the Austin Spurs to an assistant under Mitch Johnson with the parent club, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

King is the reigning G League Coach of the Year after leading Austin to a 22-12 finish.

“King becomes an NBA assistant coach after the Austin Spurs had the top defensive rating (102.3) and recorded the highest victory margin in G League history (+23.5),” Scotto wrote.

He began his career as a video intern with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in 2018-19, before moving on to a role with the Detroit Pistons. He was then hired by the New York Knicks as head video coordinator.

During that time, King went viral for attempting to show then-Knicks forward Julius Randle something on a laptop from the sideline during a game. Randle angrily swatted away the laptop.

King was named head coach of Austin before last season, when they advanced to the Western Conference finals. The G League Spurs were eliminated there by the eventual champion Stockton Kings.
