The entered Monday at second in the Western Conference at 21-7. That alone tells you plenty.

What it doesn’t tell you is urgency. League sources who have spoken with Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal say San Antonio remains comfortable with its current timeline and is not itching to accelerate it with a headline-grabbing trade.

The run to the NBA Cup final offered a glimpse of what this group can be when healthy. It didn’t trigger a rush to the trade phone.

“They’re not going to sit around being satisfied,” one source told Afseth. “But I don’t see them making a move like trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo. They can be patient and opportunistic.”

Big Swing? Unlikely

Around the league, there’s recognition that the Spurs have the assets to make a major move if they want. The question is whether they should.

Some rival teams have wondered if San Antonio might look to add a young, ascending piece rather than a fully formed star. One name floated to Afseth was the Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III, viewed as a potential long-term fit if circumstances ever aligned.

“They could do something like Orlando did with Desmond Bane,” one source said. “But it would have to fit their timeline.”

That’s the key phrase. Timeline.

Learning, Not Lamenting

Publicly, the message has matched the sourcing.

After the Cup loss, rookie guard Dylan Harper framed the experience as part of growth, not a missed opportunity.

“Sky is the limit,” Harper said, via Afseth. “It’s our second game with a healthy roster. It’s nothing to overreact about.”

That mindset mirrors how rival executives see San Antonio. Competitive now. Dangerous later. And in no hurry to trade tomorrow for today.

For the Spurs, patience isn’t passive. It’s part of the plan.
