Spurs Sign Devin Vassell to Five-Year Extension

Spurs guard Devin Vassell is signing a five-year, $146 million extension, his agents at CAA Sports told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.Devin Vassell

This rookie-scale contract extension cements Vassell as one of the Spurs’ foundational pieces on their young, rebuilding roster alongside No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, 2022 No. 9 overall pick Jeremy Sochan, and 2019 late first-round pick Keldon Johnson

Vassell, out of Florida State, was drafted with the No. 11 pick in the 2020 draft, and in 38 games last season averaged 18.5 points (43.9% FG, 38.7% 3P), 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.1 steals.

The 23-year-old showcased his talent in a breakout year before sustaining a knee injury in January, which caused him to have surgery and miss two months of action. While Vassell missed time, he proved himself to fit the mold of a Spurs’ prototypical corner piece, as an athletic, talented scorer who can be a difference-maker on both ends of the court.

The Spurs are known for signing their first-round picks to extensions, including notable Spurs players in recent years such as Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, and Johnson.

Vassell will join the company of five other NBA players from his 2020 NBA Draft class to sign an extension — the Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton, Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart, and Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane.
