Steve Kerr Officially Signs 2-Year Extension With Warriors: ‘Let’s Keep It Rolling’

Steve Kerr officially signed a two-year extension with the Golden State Warriors today. The Warriors signed Kerr to a two-year, $35 million extension, making him the highest-paid coach in NBA history.

“Yeah, I felt very comfortable making this a two-year extension. Joe [Lacob] felt comfortable as well,” Kerr said ahead of the Warriors’ game against the Washington Wizards, via ESPN. “We’re in a really unique situation where we have an era that’s winding down and another that’s coming. We’re trying to make them merge and make the most of that this year and next year … let’s keep it rolling for another couple of years and then reassess it.”

Kerr’s deal was set to expire at the end of this season. His $17.5 million-per-season extension takes him through the 2025-26 season. The extension aligns him with the two years left on Stephen Curry’s contract.

“These things always take some time,” Kerr said. “I knew I always wanted to come back. Joe made it clear he wanted me back. We worked it out and I couldn’t be more excited.”

Kerr joined the Warriors in 2014. Since then, the Dubs have played in six NBA Finals and won four championships.

“It’s been fun. I’ve really enjoyed this season,” Kerr said, “Despite the fact that we’ve lost some really close games. I’ve really loved coaching this group. It’s been an exciting season, a challenge, but all enjoyable.”

Curry has won two regular-season MVPs and one Finals MVP under Kerr.

“There’s a handful of player-coach and trio-coach stories in league history that are comparable to ours,” Curry said. “And that’s not by accident. … He’s been such a consistent presence. Not just the X’s and O’s, but of managing the lows and the highs, mainly the highs, that we’ve been at. People think it’s easy. But with success comes expectation. The nuance of keeping things together and managing not just in here, but managing up as well, it’s hard. It just reminds you of the special personality and character you have to have to do this job.”
