Suns coach Monty Williams and center Deandre Ayton did not address a heated sideline incident between the two during their Game 7 blowout loss to the Mavericks on Sunday.
“It’s internal,” Williams told the media.
Meanwhile, Ayton did not speak to reporters after the game. It’s unclear yet whether the Suns will conduct exit interviews.
The incident happened about three minutes into the third quarter, with the Suns trailing, 70-32. (Their 57-27 halftime deficit was the largest in Game 7 history.)
Ayton was taken out of the game in favor of Bismack Biyombo and seemed to take issue with it. He said something in Williams’ direction, and Williams responded with “What did you say?”
Assistant coaches then intervened, stepping between Williams and Ayton to try to cool things. Ayton never returned to the game.
This will be something to keep an eye on this offseason, as Ayton will be a restricted free agent in July. He reportedly was not happy with his contract situation entering the season.
