The Suns aren’t hiring Kevin Young as head coach, but he did interview for the position. But he lost out to former Lakers coach Frank Vogel, as we relayed here.
No matter, Young will remain as an assistant with the Suns, and the highest-paid assistant in the league at that, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
That can only be considered a good thing for Phoenix, as Young was believed to be a favorite for the players, particularly shooting guard Devin Booker.
Vogel, of course, is replacing Monty Williams, who was dismissed after the season. Williams is now set to become the highest-paid coach in NBA history, courtesy of the Pistons.
Young has served as a head coach in the G League, and has been an assistant in Phoenix since 2020. Before that, he served as an assistant with the 76ers for three years.
A native of Salt Lake City, he also coached at Utah Valley State in 2007-08 before coaching the Utah Flash of the G League from 2009-11.
Young was believed to be a candidate for the Bucks’ head-coaching vacancy at one point. That job eventually went to former Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin.
