A familiar name could be heading back to Syracuse.

The school is working toward hiring Siena coach Gerry McNamara as its next head coach, according to ESPN, with a deal expected to come together in the near future.

It would bring things full circle.

McNamara just led Siena to the NCAA tournament, winning the MAAC title and pushing No. 1 seed Duke before falling in the first round. The Saints even held a double-digit halftime lead, something no 16-seed had done before.

That run helped. So did the history.

McNamara spent 15 years on the Syracuse bench as an assistant under Jim Boeheim and Adrian Autry before taking over at Siena, where he went 37-30 in two seasons.

He also knows the program as well as anyone.

A key piece of the 2003 national title team, McNamara remains one of the most accomplished players in school history, holding records for made threes and minutes played.

Syracuse athletic director Bryan Blair met with him multiple times over the past week, per ESPN, as the school looks to reset after moving on from Autry.

There is also a renewed emphasis on NIL support, with Syracuse aiming to be competitive in that area within the ACC. All of it points to a clear direction. And a familiar face to lead it.
