    Cavaliers

    The Cavs are climbing the ranks defensively and are in the top 10 in the NBA in that category once again. But offensively, well, not so much.Jarrett Allen

    So that may lead them to explore some trades, per Michael Scotto and Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype, with wing Caris LeVert and center Jarrett Allen being the names seemingly mentioned most.

    “They started the season with several injuries to a lot of players and got off to a 4-6 start, and they’re 9-4 since. They’re still a Top 10 defense like last year, but they’ve been struggling on offense,” Gozlan said on the HoopsHype Podcast. “They’re 24th… Their bench is one of the worst scoring benches at 24th in points per game, have a minus-2.6 net rating, and are last in offensive rating. I suppose that’s one of their bigger indicators of what’s going on with their offensive struggles.”

    He went on to say that the Cavs’ starting five seems “pretty well set,” and sources have indicated to Hoops Wire earlier this season that it’s highly doubtful they would move Allen, a favorite of both the organization and its fans.

    But the NBA silly season is almost upon us, and we all know what that means. Basically, everyone outside of maybe 10 guys in the entire league stands a chance to hear their names in trade rumors.

    “I would say that if the Cavaliers do something, it’s probably more smaller scale moves to try to reshuffle their bench and get pieces that can improve on offense,” Gozlan said.

    • It’s too soon to worry about what will become of star guard Donovan Mitchell, Scotto added. “Obviously, this year, they’re going to try to be as competitive as they can be with this core and the continuity that they have and go from there down the line,” he said. “You could always wait until the trade deadline of his expiring contract season, if you want. There’s always going to be a team interested, especially when you can acquire Bird Rights, given teams that don’t have cap space, but obviously at that stage, the return would be less.”

    Bulls

    Guards Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso, and small forward DeMar DeRozan, are the names being mentioned most when it comes to the Bulls and trade rumors.

    But others could be in the mix as well, per Scotto.

    “It’s unclear at this time, but you talk about guys that could hold value for playoff contenders that could fortify any bench on a playoff team,” he said. “I wondered about Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig on the Bulls because I do think those guys would have value. I remember in the offseason, Minnesota was also looking at Carter, in addition to Chicago. Craig had a number of teams as well because he’s a good role player.”

    • Gozlan added: “If the Bulls end up trading a lot of their best players, their starters, LaVine, DeRozan, and Caruso, then eventually, that’ll probably also extend to some of their bench players. With Carter, there are just so many guards on the Bulls right now. He’s been in the rotation, but he definitely feels like he can have a bigger role elsewhere if given the opportunity.”

    Wizards

    • Given their awful start, the Wizards are expected to be one of the more active teams between now and the trade deadline, several sources indicated to Hoops Wire.
    • New head of basketball operations Michael Winger is seeking picks and young players, aiming to build the team in the same model as the Thunder. So that would mean lots of picks. Just about everyone on the roster is expected to be made available. Though Washington is likely to want to keep rookie guard/forward Bilal Coulibaly and small forward Deni Avdija.
    • The job of Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. remains safe despite the team’s early struggles, sources said.

    East Notes: Hawks, Pistons, Bulls, Ayo Dosunmu

    Hawks

    The fact the Hawks are starting camp with everyone healthy is a plus for a team that’s looking to build off last year’s 41-41 finish, per Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

    “I really feel that having everybody healthy, ready to go with the energy, with the new concepts that we have offensively, defensively has been really great,” center Clint Capela said, via Williams. “Energy was there on offense and defense, a lot of intensity. So I like it. It’s fun.”

    • The Hawks will need to find a replacement to start at power forward after trading John Collins to the Jazz this offseason, wrote Wes Morton of Peachtree Hoops. De’Andre Hunter and Saddiq Bey are undoubtedly among the candidates. And whichever doesn’t start at power forward likely will at small forward.
    • GM Landry Fields also offered high praise for third-year power forward Jalen Johnson. “The progression of Jalen, especially defensively in the last season, really gave us a lot of hope this year where it’s like, ‘OK, can you put him into the more four lineups whether he’s starting or not and add in some of those elements defensively as well as his playmaking ability,” Fields told reporters. “We’re excited for his growth this year.”

    Pistons

    Power forward Isaiah Stewart has the respect of coach Monty Williams and his teammates, Williams said, via Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press.

    And Stewart may have the inside track on the starting power forward role because of it.

    “It’s his character, it’s his toughness, but more importantly he works, and guys respect work,” Williams told reporters. “In this culture, when you walk into this gym and you’re not working, you stand out. And he leads it. He and (Jalen Duren) have led the charge. Those guys are on the floor every day together getting sweat equity in, and it sends a message to the team.”

    • Meanwhile, the primary backup big man role will go to either Marvin Bagley or James Wiseman — a couple of former No. 2 overall draft picks. “It’s a work in progress right now to figure out which one of those guys is going to step up and be the, more than likely, the backup big,” Williams told reporters.

    Bulls

    Minus the injured Lonzo Ball, the Bulls’ starting point guard job appears to be up for grabs. Candidates include Coby White, Jevon Carter and Ayo Dosunmu, who spoke to K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago about the role.

    “Ultimately, I think that competition is going to help our team in the long run,” Dosunmu told Johnson. “We go at each other and try to kill each other in practice. When we’re on the court together, it’s going to make our team much more smooth. Me going into my third year and our core group being together pretty much the same time, it’s getting time for us to turn the corner.”

    • Veteran addition Torrey Craig is expected to add an edge to the Bulls’ frontcourt. “A little bit of toughness,” Craig told reporters of his role. “A little bit of an edge for guys with raw emotion to say how they feel and wear those emotions on their sleeve.’”

    While the Bulls didn’t announce details, the deal is for two years with a player option after year one, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. It is most likely for the veteran’s minimum, or just slightly above that.

    Craig, 32, has spent the past two-and-half years with the Suns. He averaged career-highs of 7.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 74 games last season. Along with Phoenix, has spent time with the Bucks and Nuggets since entering the NBA in 2017.

    Chicago has been looking for veteran reinforcements up front and Craig fits such a description. While he’s listed at 6-foot-7, he is rugged enough to defend the power forward and center positions.

    The Bulls are also adding point guard Jevon Carter and re-signing guard Coby White, as we relayed on our NBA free agency tracker. 

    While the Suns lost Craig, they have added the likes of center/forward Bol Bol, forward Yuta Watanabe, forward Keita Bates-Diop and center/forward Drew Eubanks to the frontcourt.

    Jimmy Haslam Completes Purchase of Bucks’ Ownership Stake

    Bucks owner Marc Lasry is completing the sale of his stake in the Bucks to to Cleveland Browns majority owner Jimmy Haslam, per Shams Charania and Eric Nehm of The Athletic.Jimmy Haslam

    Haslam is paying $3.5 billion for his stake in the Bucks, and the sale has been approved by the NBA Board of Governors, Charania and Nehm added.

    Haslam will now share ownership of the NBA franchise with current co-owner Wes Edens — he though will continue to be majority owner of the Browns even with partial ownership of the Bucks, sources told Hoops Wire.

    Edens and Lasry bought the Bucks from previous owner Herb Kohl in 2014, reportedly for $550 million. Haslam’s interest in the Bucks came just recently, but intensified after American businessman Mat Ishbia bought controlling interest of the Suns, Charania reported. Ishbia had been viewed as a potential Bucks co-owner first.

    As Charania and Nehm reported, the Bucks have some interesting roster decisions coming up, with forward Khris Middleton possessing a player option on his contract this summer. Center Brook Lopez and forwards Jae Crowder and Joe Ingles are all also eligible for free agency. Point guard Jevon Carter has a player option on his deal as well.

    Nets Waiving Jevon Carter To Make Room For Goran Dragic

    The Nets intend to waive point guard Jevon Carter to clear a roster spot for guard Goran Dragic, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.Jevon Carter

    Dragic met with the Nets on Friday, per Marc Stein of the Stein Line, and agreed to a deal on Monday, as first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

    Carter, 26, is 6-foot-1 and is averaging 3.6 points in 46 appearances with the Nets, after arriving in a trade with the Suns in late August. He spent two years with the Suns after playing for the Grizzlies as a rookie in 2018-19.

    As ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted, waiving Carter will result in a salary-cap hit of $3.9 million for the Nets next season.

    Dragic has appeared in just five games this season and was traded from the Raptors to the Spurs on deadline day, then waived by the Spurs shortly thereafter. He was also drawing interest from the Lakers, Clippers, Mavericks, Bucks and Warriors, per reports.

    “In his 15th NBA season, Dragic still has recent playoff success on his résumé,” Wojnarowski wrote. “He started 16 postseason games and averaged 19 points during the Miami Heat’s run to the NBA Finals in 2020 before a plantar fasciitis injury sidelined him in the Finals.”

    For the Nets, Dragic should provide some immediate relief for the games that Kyrie Irving is forced to miss because of New York’s vaccine mandate.

    Nets coach Steve Nash reportedly played a big role in Dragic’s recruitment, given that the two were teammates with the Suns early in Dragic’s career.

    Carter must wait 48 hours to clear waivers before he can sign with another team. He also stands a chance to be claimed off the waiver wire, of course.

    Suns Acquire Landry Shamet From Nets In Deal Involving Pick

    The Nets have agreed to trade guard Landry Shamet to the Suns for guard Jevon Carter and the No. 29 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.Landry Shamet

    Shamet, 24, is 6-foot-4 and averaged 9.3 points in 61 games this past season, as the Nets were his third team in three seasons. He is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension in 2022. 

    Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report was the first to report that Shamet had been made available in trade talks earlier this week, with Ian Begley of SNY.tv suggesting multiple teams had been in touch with the Nets.

    “His acquisition by the Suns restocks the depth chart with Carter — who was left out of the playoff rotation — now headed to the Nets,” wrote Kevin Zimmerman of Arizona Sports. “Phoenix also faces losing backup point guard Cameron Payne, plus Langston Galloway and E’Twaun Moore in free agency.”

    Carter, 25, is 6-1 and averaged 4.1 points in limited action with the Western Conference champions. He did appear in 60 games, though, and assuming he sticks in Brooklyn, will offer some depth behind the likes of Kyrie Irving and James Harden.

    “Some context to Landry Shamet being traded to the Suns: Monty Williams was a huge advocate for Shamet after coaching him in Philly,” wrote Jordan Schultz of ESPN. “Nets also wanted to get off Landry before he was eligible for his extension this fall, according to league sources.”
