The Thunder have signed NBA free agent guard Buddy Boeheim and waived forward Alex Reese, the team announced in a press release.
Both moves were likely made to land each player with Oklahoma City’s G League squad, the OKC Blue.
Boeheim agreed to an Exhibit 10 training camp deal with the Thunder back in July, after being waived by the Pistons. He is the son of longtime Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.
Buddy Boeheim spent most of last season with the Motor City Cruise of the G League before being promoted to the parent club on a two-way deal in February. He appeared in just NBA games but fared well in the G League — averaging 15.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 47 games.
Along the way, he knocked down a sizzling 41.9% of his 3-pointers and 86.0% of his free throws. For now, it appears the plan is to have him report to the Blue, which means the Thunder will have to waive him before the season. For the record, the Blue acquired Boeheim in a trade with the Cruise over the summer.
Reese, 25, is 6-foot-9 and spent four seasons at Alabama before going undrafted in 2021. He too is headed for the Blue, it seems.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
