With Karl-Anthony Towns being sent off in a trade to the Knicks, there’s no doubt about who’s the Timberwolves’ main man.
That would be no less than guard Anthony Edwards. Still, Edwards indicated he finds the whole thing to be odd, now that Towns will be playing somewhere else.
Minnesota is coming off a run to the Western Conference Finals, so the shakeup did indeed come as somewhat of a surprise — both across the NBA and for the Timberwolves themselves.
“I feel like it’s kind of weird to talk about it because he just got traded,” Edwards said, via Chris Hine of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “That’s my dog, man. It wasn’t like a ‘one’ or ‘two’ situation. We both was the ‘one.’ We just played off of each other.”
Some did wonder about the fit of Edwards and Towns, but again, it sure seemed to work last season. Same goes for the frontcourt of Towns and center Rudy Gobert.
“Not something anyone expected two days before training camp. So still processing it,” Gobert said. “Obviously KAT is someone that I have a lot of love and respect for. We had two years together, and I’m really grateful for the time that we spent together. Since Day One, he embraced me. He did anything he could to help me be the best version of myself on and off the court. So I’m really grateful for that.”
In exchange, the Timberwolves are receiving power forward Julius Randle, guard Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round pick from the Knicks. So yes, there will still be plenty of talent around Edwards and the rest. But that doesn’t necessarily make it any easier.
“I mean, I think everybody knows KAT’s my brother, so that definitely hurt,” Edwards said.
