As expected, Mike Conley is back in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves officially re-signed the veteran point guard to a rest-of-season contract, a move reflected in the NBA’s transaction log.
Conley’s return closes a strange but strategic loop.
Minnesota sent Conley to the Bulls in a salary-dump deal on February 3. Chicago flipped him to the Hornets the next day, and Charlotte promptly waived him. That sequence cleared the way for Conley to return to the Wolves, since NBA rules only prevent a player from re-signing with the team that last traded him away.
The Wolves waited the full 14 days before completing the signing, maximizing cap and tax flexibility while still meeting the league’s minimum roster requirements. Minnesota still has one open spot on its 15-man roster.
Now in his 19th NBA season, Conley had been Minnesota’s starting point guard after arriving at the 2023 deadline. He shifted to a reserve role this season behind Donte DiVincenzo, averaging career-lows across the board in minutes, scoring, assists, and shooting percentage.
Even so, the Wolves were reluctant to move on from him entirely. Conley’s leadership, organization, and steady presence in the locker room have long been valued internally.
By shedding his $10.8 million expiring contract and then bringing him back on a prorated veteran minimum deal, Minnesota effectively got the best of both worlds.
Conley is expected to remain a situational piece down the stretch, especially after the Wolves added Ayo Dosunmu at the deadline.
