Trade Idea: Cavs move Donovan Mitchell this summer? Let’s slow down

It’s March. The Cavs are in fourth. The playoffs haven’t even started.

And somehow, we’re already trading Donovan Mitchell?

Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz floated an offseason idea that sends Mitchell to San Antonio for Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and two first-round picks. On paper, sure. That’s a package.

In reality? This feels like jumping the gun.

I like Greg. He’s talented and just doing his job. So by no means is this intended to be a shot at him. Let’s take a look at what Swartz wrote:

“If the Cavs crash and burn in the playoffs and Mitchell refuses to sign an extension, Cleveland may be forced to listen to trade offers before he hits unrestricted free agency in 2027. The Spurs have proven that they’re ready to start competing for championships, yet could use more playoff experience on the roster.

“Cleveland may be forced to reset around Evan Mobley if Mitchell won’t commit to the franchise. Harper, 20, was the No. 2 overall pick in last June’s draft and looks like a future All-Star. Vassell, 25, is averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and making 38.3 percent of his threes this year and the Cavs pick up a pair of future first-round picks.”

That’s all fair. But this is an offseason conversation. Not a now conversation. The Cavs are gearing up for a playoff run, not planning an exit.

They went out and got James Harden for this exact moment. You don’t do that and to start thinking about a rebuild.

Now, could things change this summer? Of course. If Cleveland flames out and Mitchell won’t extend, you at least have to think about it. But that’s a big if.

And even then, you’re dealing from a position of strength. Mitchell is still in his prime. Still producing at an elite level. Still the guy defenses game-plan for. That all counts for a lot.

The return here? Interesting. Harper has upside. Vassell is solid. Picks are picks. But you’re trading a proven star for potential.

That’s not how contenders operate. That’s how they reset. And the Cavs, right now, are not a team looking to reset.

They’re looking to break through. There’s a difference.
