Trae Young and the Wizards appear open to building something longer term.

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, both sides are receptive to discussing a contract extension this offseason. Young is earning $45.9 million this season and holds a $48.9 million player option for 2026-27, which he can decline to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Washington has explored a three-year framework in the neighborhood of $120 million, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. There is believed to be mutual interest in continuing the partnership after Young’s representation worked closely with the Wizards’ front office to facilitate his move to Washington.

Young was acquired from Atlanta in a deal that sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to the Hawks.

The four-time All-Star carries career averages of 25.2 points and 9.8 assists per game, though he has yet to suit up for Washington due to a lingering quad injury. This season, he is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists, as Atlanta went 2-8 in games he played.

Young recently reflected on the stage of his career and his role with a young roster.

“I came into a kind of similar spot that I did when I was a rookie, but I’m 27 now,” Young told ESPN. “I’m more mature now. I’m young enough where I can relate, but old enough I got enough experience. So I’m excited to be around some of these young guys.”
