The Trail Blazers have waived rookie shooting guard Malachi Smith, per the NBA transactions log.
Smith, 23, is 6-foot-4 and went undrafted out of Gonzaga in June. He signed with the Blazers immediately after the draft and played for their Summer League squad.
He was named West Coast Conference Sixth Man of the Year last season, averaging 8.7 points and shooting 50 percent on 3-pointers. Odds are he will now head to the Rip City Remix, Portland’s affiliate in the G League.
Smith’s grandfather, Larry Knight, was a 1979 draft pick of the Jazz.
Smith also spent time playing collegiately for Wright State, before transferring to Chattanooga and then Gonzaga.
