Up to 12 NBA teams could change coaches this offseason

There hasn’t been much movement on the NBA coaching carousel lately.

Last spring was quiet. A handful of teams stuck with interim coaches rather than making splashy hires, and only the Suns and Knicks made true outside additions.

Since then? Even quieter.

The Pelicans are the only team to make an in-season change. The Blazers had to pivot as well, but that came under unusual circumstances, elevating Tiago Splitter after Chauncey Billups was arrested back in October.

So yeah, it’s been pretty calm. But that may not last.

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, there’s a growing belief around the league that this spring could swing the other way in a big way.

“There’s going to be eight to 12 (coaching changes),” one source told Fischer.

If that ends up being close to accurate, we’re talking about nearly a third of the league potentially making a move in a matter of weeks once the regular season wraps.

And when that many jobs open up, the candidate pool becomes the story.

Fischer points to a number of assistants who could be in line for interviews or bigger roles. Among them: Sean Sweeney (Spurs), Micah Nori (Timberwolves), Jared Dudley (Nuggets), Dave Bliss (Thunder), Chris Quinn (Heat), Royal Ivey (Rockets), and Luke Walton (Pistons).

Some of those names have been circling openings for a while. Others are starting to gain traction now.

Either way, after a long stretch of stability, the league could be headed for a sudden wave of change on the sidelines.

We’ll see how many dominoes actually fall. But it sounds like more than a few are already wobbling.
