The Golden State Warriors are playing a delicate game of chess, with Jonathan Kuminga squarely in the middle of their trade-market strategy.
The team has kept a close eye on potential deals for a star player, but Kuminga’s future in Golden State could hinge on whether those efforts bear fruit.
After failing to agree on an extension with Kuminga before the season, the Warriors remain at a crossroads. On one hand, he’s proving his worth as a key contributor. On the other, he might just be their most enticing trade chip in the quest to add another big-name player alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
“One of the most important players in the league to watch right now, believe it or not, is Jonathan Kuminga,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on Get Up. “The Warriors have been sniffing around making a star player transaction for almost a year now.
“Right now, they’re basically making the final analysis on Jonathan Kuminga. Are they going to keep him or are they going to move him?”
Kuminga’s recent play has added intrigue to the situation. In the last two weeks, he’s stepped into the starting lineup and averaged 21 points and five rebounds, shooting nearly 50% from the field.
Windhorst didn’t mince words about the implications: “This could also be termed as a showcase depending.”
For the Warriors, it’s a balancing act. Trade Kuminga, and they risk losing a blossoming star. Keep him, and the title window may close faster than they’d like. Either way, the next moves could define their future — and Kuminga’s place in it.
