Jonathan Kuminga’s exit clock continues to tick in Golden State.
Kuminga left Thursday’s game against Dallas after twisting his left ankle and hyperextending his left knee, per Anthony Slater of The Athletic. The Warriors do not believe the injuries are serious, and he is scheduled for an MRI, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
But the bigger story is not medical. It is philosophical.
NBA on Prime’s Chris Haynes reported that Kuminga has “no desire” to remain with the Warriors and is actively hoping to be moved before the Feb. 5 deadline.
Haynes added that Kuminga believes his relationship with coach Steve Kerr is effectively beyond repair and that he feels unsupported and undervalued within the organization.
On the court, Kuminga has made his case loudly. He dropped 20 points in 21 minutes Tuesday after Jimmy Butler’s season-ending injury. Before exiting Thursday, he posted 10 points, two assists, and two steals in just nine minutes.
Kerr said Kuminga will remain in the rotation. The player, meanwhile, remains firm on his stance.
Golden State GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. acknowledged this week that the trade market is lukewarm. Rival teams also believe the Warriors are unwilling to take back unwanted long-term salary in any Kuminga deal.
In other words, the desire to move is real. The leverage is not. And the clock keeps moving.
